“I made a bet with my friends that I could get a reservation at this restaurant. Apparently they are fully booked for the next 4-6 months!”
There was a period of time when I was hanging out with D quite a bit. He was my “filler” and I was his. He never quite agreed with my choice of the word “filler” but to me, it basically meant he was my dining buddy, my impromptu coffee mate and my movie kaki. Whilst we were hanging out, he brought me to a couple of interesting spots that I had never explored before. He knew I enjoyed Omakase as I was constantly raving about the Omakase at Shinji (I have previously reviewed this but I will review it again in later entries). One Sunday, we were supposed to have dinner together so in the afternoon he tried his luck with Teppei and managed to get us a seating.
Teppei is a very small restaurant that serves about 15-20 people each time. Their Omakase menu is known to be extremely value-for-money at $40, $50, $60 per head. When we arrived, there was a mass of people standing outside the restaurant waiting to be seated. There are two seatings for dinner, one at 6, and another at 830. I went without any expectations. Although I passed by the restaurant a couple of times, I had actually never heard of it up until recently. But I bumped into a friend outside the restaurant, and he told me his friend had booked them for this dinner 2 months ago. He had heard a lot of good reviews about this restaurant and was excited being that it was also his first time there.
There was a good mix of cooked and raw food and the Omakase selection reminded me of this other restaurant in Taipei called 瞒着爹－第一店. They served a good variety and quantity of items as well for about SGD70 per head. The décor was somewhat similar and it also sat up to about 15 people.
The fish served at Teppei are fresh and for the price paid, they serve pretty good quality fish. Every single slice melts in your mouth and that’s just one of the many courses!
The one course that was a tad too exotic for me was the barnacles. It looked gross and I wasn’t keen on eating at all. The lady seated beside me seemed to be thoroughly enjoying hers so I offered her mine and she insisted I try a small piece, which I did, just so I could say I have tried it – NOT a fan.
Service at Teppei is decent with courses being served and cleared promptly. I would consider it no frills although the dishes are presented well and they do take note to cater to specific food preferences despite the mass production. The restaurant is clean and I would recommend it for a good meal with great company for a chill and relaxing dinner that is satisfying both in terms of quality and quantity.
Should you decide to check out Teppei, be sure to book at least a month in advance to avoid disappointment! Although I have heard they are currently booked out till January 2014!
